TPMS diagnostics and tire pressure sensors
What is TPMS equipment?
The TPMS system is a tire pressure monitoring system that is mandatory in all new cars manufactured in Europe since 2014. In the United States, this system appeared a little earlier and since 2007, it has been mandatory to install this system in cars there.
What is TPMS equipment for?
The main purpose of this system is to transmit real-time information about tire pressure to the driver, thus reducing the probability of traffic accidents, extending the service life of the car's tires and making fuel consumption more efficient. It is the TPMS equipment that is needed so that the mechanic can attach new tire pressure sensors, check system failures, and activate damaged tire pressure sensors.
Features of TPMS equipment
All TPMS devices also have basic diagnostic functions: error reading and deletion, adaptations, some devices also have service functions. However, the main functions of TPMS equipment:
- Activation of TPMS sensors
- Sensor data reading
- TPMS diagnostics
- Reading TPMS fault codes
- TPMS sensor ID scan
- Monitoring of TPMS live parameters
- Retraining function
- And others.
Tire pressure sensors
Tire pressure sensors need to be used because it ensures safer vehicle operation. Since improper tire pressure affects the handling of the vehicle, it is most relevant when there are emergency situations and they need to be avoided. The pressure in the tire has a significant influence on the braking distance and the maneuverability of the controlled vehicle.
How do tire pressure sensors work?
TPMS systems are divided into two types, indirect or direct system. In a direct TPMS system, tire pressure sensors are installed separately in each tire. The indirect TPMS system measures the tire pressure by evaluating the wheel rotation speeds, the ESP and ABS systems measure the tire rotation speed and if the pressure in at least one tire drops, that wheel starts to rotate faster. Tire pressure data is transmitted via radio waves to the vehicle's computer, and when deviations occur, a light on the dashboard lights up. There is also external TPMS equipment - these are special valve caps that can send information to the car's computer or the valve caps change color if the tire pressure changes. This is the principle of operation of the tire pressure sensor, it is not complicated, so this equipment is quickly becoming popular.
How to use TPMS equipment?
Tire pressure sensors require maintenance and repair. If they are newly installed in a car where they were not, then programming of the tire pressure sensors is required. Diagnostics are also carried out for tire pressure sensors, it is necessary to check the condition of the batteries, sometimes it is necessary to change the valve elements. Tire pressure sensors are used with all car brands: Audi, BMW, VW, Škoda, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Seat, Ford, Honda, Infiniti, Kia, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Toyota, Lexus, Opel, Peugeot, Citroen , Subaru, Mitsubishi, Volvo, Renault and other car models.
